Through the Cracks by Barbara Fister

Anni Koskinen was a Chicago cop until she testified in a police brutality lawsuit against a fellow officer. She resigned and became private investigator when her colleagues on the force refused to back her up. Now she’s found her niche locating the runaway children of Chicago’s upper middle class. This time Anni is tracking a serial rapist and uncovers evidence that the politically ambitious attorney who prosecuted the case would rather leave buried.

Although I enjoyed In the Wind, the first book in the series, I liked this one better. Anni has a really interesting back story (foster child with an autistic older brother) and she writes Chicago really, really well. Fans of Sara Paretsky will like this series. I’m looking forward to the next one.
