Kim Harrison’s Witch books

Thanks to a recommendation by Jim Butcher, I picked up Dead Witch Walking a month or so ago. I got completely hooked on the universe. The main character is Rachel Morgan, an earth witch who is also a runner, which is basically a supernatural bounty hunter.

Occasionally, Harrison’s writing style bugs me but she’s improved with each book. Her world-building is excellent and her characters really pop off the page. I particularly like Jenks, Rachel’s pixie partner. The other two books in the series are Every Which Way But Dead and The Good, The Bad, and the Undead.

As an aside, I think it’s interesting that so many supernatural series are set in the Midwest. Wizards work in Chicago (Dresden Files), witches practice in Cincinnati (Rachel Morgan series), and the Vampire Queen lives in Minneapolis (Undead series by MaryJanice Davidson). I’m beginning to wonder when werewolves are going to invade Central Illinois. Or Wisconsin. Although they’re more likely to have to worry about werecows.
